Quick Bites: Oh Fudge… Yellow Cake

It was not supposed to be a birthday celebration or really a party at all. Just a small get-together for the family that happened to fall days after my mother’s birthday.

However, the siblings, including me, took to a family group chat to discuss plans for a birthday cake. The choice was simple: Jarosch’s Bakery in Elk Grove. Although it is close to a 30-to-40-minute drive from our family house, it is our go-to bakery! The drive was always worth it. Their cakes are always delicious.

We brainstormed, all of us trying to remember her specific favorite cake. In the past, we have had strawberry filling and banana cake to name a few. We determined that she liked the fudge filling but that was the only detail we could remember.

My sister resorted to texting my mom under the disguise of asking for a friend about what’s good at Jarosch’s Bakery to end up only with “everything.” Which although true, was not the helpful hint we had been seeking.

Ultimately, we gave it a solid guess and my older sister placed an order: yellow cake with fudge filling. She gave the bakery my dad’s phone instead of her own since she happens to live in a different time zone and thought that to be best.

The bakery called my dad to validate the order, and his phone recognized the call: Jarosch’s Bakery. Unfortunately, this let the Cake out of the bag since my mom happened to hear the name. She was suspicious and connected all the crumbs.

Although we were successful in guessing her favorite as fudge filling, we missed a key ‘ingredient’, she preferred white cake over any other kind. Her favorite cake from Jarosch’s Bakery is a white cake with fudge filling topped with chocolate buttercream filling.

My brother went and picked up the yellow cake on Saturday for Sunday’s shindig. The bakery which is not open on Sundays was busy enough for him to need a number. Unfortunately, he didn’t realize this until after already waiting so he took a number to continue the wait. It was a story he told all, as he proudly brought and presented the no-longer-secret birthday cake.

There was so much food at our family get-together. From a charcuterie board to chips and guac, Chili, cornbread, and more, yet, there was real anticipation for the dessert. And finally, it was time.

We sliced into the white frosting cake blooming with pink, yellow, and blue frosted flowers. In brown the cake read Happy Birthday Mom.

I took a slice of the yellow cake with fudge filling and indulged in sugar. It was sweet, the frosting thick on the sides and seeping through the cake as another small layer: cake, frosting, cake, fudge. The fudge was amazing and creamy. The perfect mix between thick candy fudge and the runny ice cream type.

At the end of the night when leftovers were disbursed, I made sure to make a beeline for the cake and secured a piece to go.

Cake in hand, my boyfriend and I left the family event buzzing with conversation and sugar!
