I walked through the bolts of cotton fabric. Killing time while I patiently waited for my sister and mom to be done. I had already collected the Scrapbooking supplies I needed from the papercraft side of Joann’s.
The loud old-fashioned almost comic book-style fabric caught my eye among the other bolts. I pulled it out and unwrapped a segment. The fabric had a print of vintage patterns. I absolutely loved it.
Now with an idea, I looked for someone who would and could take it from the bolt to a wearable outfit. My mother picked up the project.
It did actually turn out to be a project. The full skirt fit perfectly. The top on the other hand was not as well behaved. Going beyond the pattern, my mom changed the straps, and finally made larger fixes by adding darts to ensure the fit was right.
By the time Summerfest rolled around I had a homemade outfit that was ready to rock ‘n roll! The two-piece outfit included a high-waisted full skirt that went slightly past the knee. The top was more of a bandeau with straps. It was tied in the back and had a square neckline. This outfit had a 1950’s flair.
Personally, I love vintage-inspired outfits, and the 1950’s wear usually flatters my hourglass figure. Honestly, shopping for a flattering fit is exhausting. I truly would not mind an entire wardrobe of full skirts and dresses!
Why this Vintage Outfit for Summerfest?
Here is why this super modest vintage dress worked for this festival. First off, Summerfest is for all ages and is family-friendly. With that said, most people generally wear more everyday outfits or at least more casual festival wear. My dress did fit in with fest-goers who chose to wear sundresses.
As for the outfit itself, full skirts are just fun! Although the amount of fabric used is kind of ridiculous, it leads to lots of movement. And with a longer length movement from a skirt is more carefree! Plus, when you dance and spin it looks cool. And with the “Walk the Moon” set I was definitely moving around!
It felt fantastic to wear an outfit that was tailored and made just for me to one of the largest music fests!
Such a fun outfit for a fun girl! You rock this look Betsy!
Thanks! It is such a great outfit.
