Goo Goo Dolls at Northerly Island August 22nd 2023

Goo Goo Dolls: Artist Spotlight Northerly Island

Ah, the Goo Goo Dolls‘ August 22nd set at Northerly Island. What a night to remember! It’s hard to believe that it’s been so many years since I first fell in love with their music. And of course, I can’t forget to mention the breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline. The twinkling lights of the city provided a stunning backdrop to the music, and it felt like the perfect setting for a night of nostalgia and timeless rock.

The evening kicked off with the band O.A.R. as the opener, and they set the perfect tone for the night. Their blend of rock and folk-infused melodies had the crowd swaying and singing along. It was a fitting choice to warm up the crowd for the Goo Goo Dolls.

As the group took the stage, there was a collective rush of excitement in the air. The band, despite the years, had aged like fine wine, and it was evident in their performance. Johnny Rzeznik’s voice still had that signature rasp and emotion that made their songs so timeless. He may have a few more lines on his face, but the passion was as strong as ever.

Diving Into the Setlist

The setlist was a trip down memory lane, filled with all the classics fans had come to love. “Broadway” was the perfect opener, and it set the nostalgic tone for the night. “Over and Over” and “Slide” had the crowd dancing and singing along, and it was incredible to see how these songs had stood the test of time.

“Big Machine” and “Here Is Gone” showcased the band’s ability to write powerful rock anthems, and they delivered them flawlessly. Meanwhile, “Black Balloon” and “Dizzy” brought out the heartfelt ballads that the Goo Goo Dolls are known for. Of course, the audience swayed with cell phones and the occasional lighter in the air.

“Sympathy” and “Name” were greeted with thunderous applause, as everyone in the audience couldn’t help but sing along to every word. It was a beautiful moment of unity, as fans of all ages celebrated the music they loved.

“Let Love In” and “Run All Night” continued to keep the energy high, and it was clear that the band was feeding off the love and enthusiasm of the crowd. The chemistry between Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac was still electric, and they played off each other with the same energy and charisma that had made them icons.

As the night drew to a close, the band returned for an encore that left everyone breathless. Their rendition of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” was a powerful tribute to a legend. Of course, they closed with their iconic hit, “Iris.” The entire crowd sang along with every word, and it was a moment of pure magic.

What’s Next for the Goo Goo Dolls

In the end, the Goo Goo Dolls’ August 22nd set at Northerly Island was a testament to the band’s enduring talent and the timelessness of their music. Some might consider the group past their prime, but their music has only grown more powerful with time. Ultimately, it was a night of pure nostalgia, and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to relive some of my favorite musical memories.

If, like me, you are looking to relive some ‘Better Days’ you are in luck. The group will be back within a short drive of Chicago later this year for a date in Milwaukee, WI. Their appearance at the Deck the Hall Ball on December 8th is going to be a must-see all-acoustic event. Plus, they will be sharing the stage with another early 00’s favorite, Train.

Tickets are on sale now for between $65 and $95.
