This path is a great place to start if you are a novice hiker, like me, looking for a bit of a challenge. Fairly friendly with what felt like some well-thought-out obstacles, this mowed path lets you naturally experience the woods. This trail was only about 2.6-mile loop and has easy to follow signs.
Along the trail, there are several areas where you have to cross a creek. Most of these areas have rocks in great spots to walk on over the water. However, these rocks can get slippery and may not be steady.
This trail did have some up and downs with hills that felt steep. When we went it was a bit muddy and some areas did get slippery.
Getting to Fox Bluff Conservation Area
Fox Bluff Conservation Area is off of Cary-Algonquin. The short drive down Cold Springs Road to the parking lot is beautiful. The trees, bare when we went, canopied beautifully over the road. It is about a 50-minute drive from Chicago depending on traffic.
Unfortunately, there is no public transportation near this conservation area.
Beauty & Wildlife
Our spring walk was filled with the sounds of birds, including a woodpecker. However, we could also hear a bit of road noise. Although we did not see a lot of wildlife, as we chatted the walk away, we knew this could be a place to watch out for Illinois animals like deer and perhaps even coyotes.
This walk felt as if it were straight out of a book, with a forest path taking you in and out of clearings, and over sparkling creeks with mini waterfalls. We also caught some early-blooming wildflowers. As a non-avid reader, I adore story-like places and this fits the bill!
It also felt as if we were the only ones on the path, making us believe we stumbled into a hidden gem. However, we did explore on a Friday morning.
Know Before You Go to Fox Bluff Conservation Area
Between the Fox River and the woods, I advise that you bring and apply an ample amount of bug spray! With the mowed trail, I also suggest doing a tick check after the hike.
