Unprepared for the weather (rain!) our plans of exploring the Gold Coast dissolved in a moment. With raindrops approaching I shoved the brochure from Cabaret into my puffy green coat hoping our souvenir wouldn’t get wet. With our plans for the night coming to a close we began the trek up North on the ‘L’ on the redline and ended up switching to the brown.
We landed in Lakeview as the rain, at least for the moment, disappeared. Alerted by a grumble in our bellies we began to think about what we wanted for dinner. After a brief deliberation our stomachs choose pizza, and our brains remembered it wasn’t a Tuesday, it was a Saturday evening! We connected the pieces and began walking over to a local favorite, Big G’s Pizza. We laughed at ourselves for changing over from the red to the brown ‘L’ as our ‘time saving’ move had just taken us well out of the way.
A great and budget friendly gem in Wrigleyville/Lakeview, Big G’s Pizza offers slices starting at just $4.75.
Unfortunately, it is closed on Tuesdays, one of the many nights we apparently get pizza cravings. Other than Tuesdays, it is usually open for dinner and late night!
We entered the restaurant and stared at the chalkboard menu wall that had an overwhelming number of choices. Then we glanced at the counter window to narrow down our options to the already made pizza slices.
The worker in the back looked at us and said “Hi.” He then went back to what he was doing and left us in peace to look over and debate our choices. It was a no pressure kind of service that someone like me who agonizes over decisions and takes forever when making choices appreciates!
Among the creative pizza’s, I saw the Penne Pasta Pesto. I got so excited and knew right then and there that was what I wanted for dinner.
Once upon a time, Dominos had their pasta bowls and I absolutely loved them. I thought it was tragic when they took them off the menu. I honestly still think about them from time to time even though it’s been a thing of the past for a long while.
Seeing pasta on pizza brought me back and I was thrilled to see how Big G’s Pizza creation would taste.
It was pretty good. I mean pasta and bread in the form of pizza. It’s kind of my food spirit animal! I only wished there had been more pasta on the pizza and a stronger flavor mostly because the way it all came together just made me want more.
Speaking of more… I recommend 2 slices if you are feeling hungry. I’d even suggest mixing and matching because they have so many creative flavors to try.
My boyfriend had the BBQ Chicken Slice, and I was lucky enough to snag a bite. It was delicious! So much flavor in the BBQ sauce. It was even on the sweeter side, which is personally a big plus.
Hungry, we devoured our delicious slices inside where we could shelter from the winter chill and rain. The back wall has this fun mural, a DJ spinning pizza instead of a track. There are also photos of customers posing in front of the Big G’s logo, with pizza of course! I believe there is a story behind the photos on the wall, so if you go and grab a slice, ask about it.
On our walk home through the Wrigleyville/Lakeview area we were lucky enough to not get caught in any rain which was a big win!
Your stories have a way of making me crave a certain food for the day, hahaha! Interesting pizza choices, not your typical Hawaiian one you make 😉
They have so many fun choices that my go-to usually isn’t needed!
Pasta and crust? Should you even call it pizza?
It’s a creative twist on a typical slice of pizza. Big G’s Pizza is actually known for their Mac & Cheese Pizza, a slice I haven’t tried yet, but I really want too!
