A Food Journey: One Car to the Next at Rooster’s Barn & Grill

It was one of those switch-a-roo moments. The one where I go from one vehicle to another. Only this time there was a meal involved between the action.

I know I am setting this up to be some juicy travel story, which it isn’t (Sorry!) There is a heaping juicy sandwich involved though!

But before the switch-a-roo and my sandwich, my day had begun in Cary.

I had been spending a few nights with my parents and my sister. My parents and I had spent a fun morning at the Chicago Botanic Garden earlier that week. Saturday was the time to go home. So we hatched a plan to get me to La Grange Park and landed on a halfway deal.

Yes, there are Metra trains in both Cary and La Grange, but they only connect in downtown Chicago! My best bet was to have someone drive me.

The plan was simple: my parents would drop me off, somewhere towards the middle, and my boyfriend, Jake, would meet up with us and drive me the rest of the way home.

Between all the schedules the swap happened over a brunch/lunch time so of course the middle ground destination happened to be a restaurant.

The Place: Rooster’s Barn & Grill

There it was a red barn building, Rooster’s Barn & Grill. We pulled into the parking lot, met up with Jake, and we began the trek to the door.

We passed through their cute patio section. It had tables with red umbrellas and decorative hanging tea lights. The weather was nice so there were a few diners already in this area.

The homey country vibe followed us in. Tables were draped in checkerboard tablecloths. Slot machines lined the wall. We chose to sit toward the back at a table, avoiding the bar and high-top seating areas.

Rooster’s Barn & Grill was fairly busy at 11 am. The bartenders seemed to welcome people in almost by name, as the door swung open, and the place continued to fill up.

The family-friendly pub offered an array of food options. We were handed both Rooster’s Barn & Grill breakfast and lunch menus. The prices for items varied largely, ranging between $9-$20.

Ultimately I chose to go for a lunch meal, their Original Pot Roast Sandwich for $13.50. Our table was split between lunch and breakfast options, my parents opting for omelets.

TV screens aired a sci-fi movie, while we shared stories of the past few days. There was a lot to catch Jake up on, between my adventures at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and other food experiences including the new Brunch Cafe and our favorite go-to the Gourmet House. It had been a few busy days!

Our food arrived and we were pleased to see that the helpings were quite generous. I still managed to gobble it all up though!

My meal was very homey. I hadn’t had a pot roast in forever. It also came on an onion bun. It gave me all the feels!

Going Home

Once our meal was done and paid for, we made the switcheroo happen. I took all of my belongings from my parent’s car and transferred them to my boyfriend’s vehicle. Then Jake and I were off, headed home.
